For me, the game is the only aspect of the Pokemon phenomena that excites me. I think they have a half baked story full of interesting but incredibly small Pokemon that does not make much sense or goes everywhere.
Pokemon is a phenomenon and kids are going crazy over it. Around the core video game, there's a whole solar system of spinoffs: Pokemon plush toys (Pokemon stuffed toys), poke dolls, Pokemon Zuken and Tomy figures, Pokemon cards and a whole multi-class within that such as celebrated Pokemon cards, promo cards, and holofoil cards, not to mention the huge gains being made in the media of Pokemon DVD's, movies, and the TV series. What is it about a computer game that has taken off this enormous? It even has celestial epochs: we are now in the Era of the Pokemon Black and White. But most of the children purchasing these goods aren't even actually playing the video game itself! That appears to be another occurrence entirely (for Nintendo, number two behind Super Mario).
Now, my son also isn't a big fan of the narrative; I am not sure what it's about Pokemon that fascinates him so much (I can't help but think that kids are infusing their imagination into the storyline and are possibly secret 'trainers,' a modern equivalent to the dragon slayer). In any case, he loves the Pokemon plush toys (plushies or Pokemon stuffed toys) though I'm unsure why. Perhaps to get a Pokemon stuffed toy would be to kind of capture one with a Pokeball. Regardless, I'm neither a stingy or indulgent parent, which typically means that though he may want a plushie, he will not get one and ends up settling for cards.
Furthermore, the traffic to APKMirror has come from all throughout the world, with the US only accounting for 10.8% of the website's background traffic over the last 28 days.
He adores the card game however and will get me to buy him the Pokemon Black and White cards whenever he can. He and his pals can spend an intense hour or two on card gaming, though they don't look so interested in the console game (that is more up my street).
Fortunately, they were letting customers play the newest game incarnation, Pokemon Black and White, that day and I waited in line for 10 minutes to play it myself, which I did for a quarter hour before the guy in charge made hints that I should probably let people smaller than myself have an opportunity.
Regardless, Pokemon is trendy and times and preferences have changed. It appears we live in an age in which morals, good, bad, and heroism are considerably more blurred than we 'simpler' children were. We merely needed to see the bad guy get it- not monsters fight it out in tournaments. Maybe kids are more complex nowadays. I do know that as a science fiction fan I do think Pokemon has potential, though by capitalizing on they'd likely alienate their audience.
When I was the kid, Japan was clearly not selling video games, but they were writing and creating animation as well as play. And what little of it got to America I as a little girl even adored. First, there was Ultraman. The monsters were grotesque, Ultraman himself was a hero but horrible too, and it was pure good vs. evil. Monsters came from outer space and Ultraman protected humanity from them. I recall one cute monster that was the size of the small person and was covered with long strands of bizarre hair (hard to explain). But even that monster, though likable, was pretty awful. My generation is pretty much figured that monsters should be ugly. Pokemon seems like they lack monster hormones or something. Just to mention it, there was also Speed Racer (amazing story- who can forget Spridal and Chim Chim- and who was Racer X really?). The Mach 5 was way cool. What little girl wouldn't like that? Ashes can not hold a candlewick to Speed!
My son is ten now, and we live in Japan. As a Mother, I am not overly worried about leaving him alone at the Pokemon Center to window shop for himself. This being Japan. Nonetheless, I am worried about him getting lost in the enormous crowds. I do confess that after 20 minutes I was pretty much going out of my mind, and said to him point blank, "OK, Jojo, time for us to get a move on," but his look of misery made it clear that physical prodding and following brooding would be what I 'd have needed to endure to get him out of there.
It is thought that women love to shop, and guys don't but that equation does not include children and hobbyists. Getting my son out of the Pokemon Center, and hoping that he will forget that there is a Pokemon Center, are hopeless prospects. Pokemon is certainly a success.
Outside of the US, users all over the world have been trying to download Pokemon GO using an app, avoiding the official app store. Since the app's release, traffic to apkmirror.com exploded, increasing from just over 600,000 visits on July 5th to over 4 million visits on July 6th.
For my middle-aged generation, the attractiveness of Pokemon is a little challenging for me to get a grab on. If Pikachu is cute, then why is he capable of such destructive force? And if he's so lethal, then why is he so adorable? But I must retract all that actually, for I can't find Pokemon in their animated avatar to be either cute or trendy. Maybe for my generation, Pokemon only do not have an allure to us. We can't figure out what they stand for.
